Councillor Charlie Tuckey 1936 - 2001
Focus regrets to report the death of local Lib Dem Councillor Charlie Tuckey
who died on New Year's Eve. Charlie had been one of our ward councillors for
8 years and a member of the Focus Team for far longer. Even before that
Charlie was well known in the area as a conscientious street cleaner and
caretaker for the council. A tireless worker He worked tirelessly for other
people in his role as Chair of the Tenants' Federation, founder member of the
Beaumont Community Centre, Friend of Brooks Farm and Liberal Democrat
Councillor. He was particularly proud when elected deputy mayor and
met people all over the borough in his efforts to raise money for
Richard House, a children's hospice. For sometime, however, Charlie's ill
health had prevented him from being as active as he wanted to be.
Greatly missed
Fellow Lib Dem councillors Bob Sullivan and Loretta Hodges agreed that
Charlie was a 'one off' whose energy, enthusiasm and good humour will be
greatly missed by all who knew and worked with him. A sad start to a New Year
Focus says: This is a sad way to begin the New Year and our thoughts go out to
Charlie's family and friends in their grief.
Neighbourhood Watch
Residents of Windsor Road, Osborne Road, Balmoral Road, Buckingham Road and Brisbane Road met recently to form a 'Neighbourhood Watch'. Residents have teamed up with Leyton Orient FC to combat crime and improve the area. Cllr. Bob Sullivan who was at the meeting said "There is overwhelming support by residents to work together to make the area safer and better to live in.
If any resident needs further information or wants to join, then please phone me on 8556 8335".
Elderly Penalised by Callous Council
To get themselves out of a financial mess our Labour Council has cut the bathing service, which gave very elderly people a chance to have a bath. It has penalised the very old who cannot bath themselves. The Lib Dem Team are shocked and disgusted that this Council can be so callous to people who can't defend themselves. You can be assured that we will keep fighting to bring some sense to this incompetent council.
Osier Way
Lib Dem Cllr. Bob Sullivan has reported the piles of rubbish piling up in Osier Way off Oliver Road. He has also asked that the road be swept as it looks as though it has been overlooked.

Going! Going! Gone.
The transfer of 2500 flats and houses from the Council to London & Quadrant Housing Association is to go ahead after residents voted in favour. 62% voted for and 38% voted against. The Focus Team fully supported the right of residents to decide.
The Council have made such a shambles of housing in this borough it is not surprising that the residents voted to have a new landlord.
Improvements needed to estates
However, now that the result is known we can get going on the much needed improvements for Beaumont, Leyton Grange, Villiers Close and Thornhill Gardens. We are sure the residents of the three tower blocks on the Beaumont Estate are looking forward to being re-housed and the blocks being knocked down".
Focus Team to work closely with residents
The Focus Team says 'We will work closely with residents to make sure that any building works carried out is agreeable and not an over development of the estates. We need to keep our open spaces. Once lost they are never regained.
Cuts Threaten Church Mead Juniors
The Councils private Education Company 'EduAction' has issued proposals that could mean that Church Mead Junior School, among others, might lose £21,000 from its budget. Cllr. Bob Sullivan says "Our local schools need all the money they can get. To cut Church Mead Junior Schools budget is not only wrong it is criminal. The Liberal Democrats will be fighting these proposed cuts and hope the Council comes to it's senses".
We Want Our Tip Site Back!
Focus has received information that the Council does not believe that the closure of the Auckland Road tip site has had any impact on dumped rubbish and is not therefore intending to replace it. Focus member Alex Wilcock says: "Since the tip site has been closed, dumped rubbish has increased. We badly need a public tip site in Leyton and we will be putting pressure on the Labour Council to change its mind".
Osborne Court
Focus has been on to the Council about the rubbish chute in Osborne Court, Beaumont Estate not being emptied for five weeks. Cllr. Bob Sullivan says: "Not only is it unsightly but is also unhealthy".
Light Relief
Focus member Alex Wilcock is chasing the Council to repair the faulty lights in Lyttleton Road and Thornhill Road.
