Lib Dem Focus Christmas 2001

Focus number 235 - over twenty years of local news and action by the Lib Dem Focus Team

Highway Robbery

Leyton residents to suffer
Money promised

The maintenance of Warren Road and Grove Green Road has been neglected for years. It was expected that, once the M11 link road was completed, traffic calming measures would be put in, making these roads residential rather than trunk roads. The Government’s Highways Agency agreed to pay £2.1million towards this. The project began and £930,000 was spent.
GLA take our money
When Ken Livingstone became Mayor of London the GLA took over the funding of such projects and received money from the Government to do it. Now the Council has asked the GLA’s Traffic for London for the remaining £1.1 million in order to complete the work. They have been told that the money was not put aside for Leyton and would, therefore, not be paid.
We want it back!
What cheek and arrogance!! We need this money. Traffic on the M11 link road is building up and we need to deter traffic rat-running back into Leyton to clog up and pollute our streets. Lib Dem Cllr Bob Sullivan is furious that the GLA, under Ken, has gone back on their word. He has written to Lib Dem Susan Kramer asking her to get Ken to give back the money we were promised.

Advertising Eyesores!

Have you noticed the advertising hoardings at the corner of Coopers Lane, the corner of Buckingham Road and the podium style hoarding in the car sales place at the corner of Windsor Road and the High Road? They have all been put up without planning permission. Not only are they illegal but they are an environmental eyesore. The Focus Team have taken this up with the Council asking them to enforce the law. The Council is now pressing the owners to take them down. We will keep you informed of developments.

Don't dump it get it taken away free!

If you want to get rid of some furniture, bed, fridge etc. then you do not have to dump it on the street corner. Ring the Council on 0800 23 23 23. They will take away three items for free. If more than three items then they will give you a quote. Keep our streets clean - ring 0800 23 23 23.

Howell Court

Residents of Howell Court, Beaumont Estate are fed up with the disturbance and mess from the Council’s external works on their block of flats and are asking for an element of compensation on their rent. The Focus Team are asking the Housing Dept. for some explanations as to why the contractors abused the rules.

Lyttleton Road

The Focus Team have asked the Council to unblock the drains in Lyttleton Road. When it rains the road is full of large puddles. Focus has also taken up the issue of the faulty lights in the road.

Fitzgerald Court

The Focus Team have chased the Council to get the entryphone system in Fitzgerald Court, Leyton Grange, fixed. It has now been done but it has taken six months. Some tenants believe that they ought to receive some compensation.

Park Road

A planning application to convert the office/yard at 77A Park Road into a 21 pupil Independent School has recently been received by the Planning Dept.

Crescent Road

The Focus Team is pleased to see that now after a year the yellow lines in Crescent Road, have now been reduced back towards Church Road, to give a few much needed additional car parking spaces for residents.

Focus is also taking up the problem of the rubbish building up in front of the derelict garage next to number one.

Thornhill Gardens

A new gate to the entrance to Thornhill Gardens has been agreed. This will, hopefully, stop outsiders from using Thornhill Gardens as a car park.
